Every so often during discussions amongst the Earthlings, usually when somebody asks to join, the issue of PubicHair arises, in the form of a demand that the supplicant remove all of their pubic hair before being permitted to join.
It seems from talking to people that the origins of this are not clear to all, so perhaps I should try to set the record straight. Or attempt to, at least; I can hardly remember myself.
Some time around April 2001, I happened across a webpage or two alleging that the Taliban regime in Afghanistan used to conduct random spot checks to make sure that people kept their pubic hair shaved, as is apparently required under certain interpretations of Islam.
I mentioned this to Neve (we were housemates at the time), and obtained a sufficiently surprised reaction that I started mentioning it at random intervals to wind her up (hey, I had finals at the time and I was bored, ok?). Not long after this, Neve asked to join the Earthlings, so I brought it up on the list for much the same reason. It never quite died down after that.
While the notion of removing pubic hair does seem to elicit a rather disgusted reaction from some people, I've personally never found it to be a big deal: it's much more of a problem when the hair starts to grow back and you get pubic stubble, which is Bad. Shaving is fine as long as you do it regularly.
I still find the notion of the police mounting random spot checks on pubic hair appealing in a bizarre sort of way, but there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of convincing evidence that this really happened.
