4.1. Driving

  • Via Eurostar/Dover ferry: about 8 hours drive from Calais, taking in Le Touquet, Abbeville, Caen, Saint-Brieuc and Morlaix
  • Via ferry: Plymouth, Rosslare or Cork to Roscoff (Plymouth is an overnight sailing), then about 1h drive to Brest.
  • Via Portsmouth: to St Malo by ferry then about 3h drive to Brest

4.2. Railing

  • Via Eurostar: From Paris Montparnasse it's about 3.5-4.0 hours train to Brest.
  • Ferry to Roscoff, and then the train to Brest via Morlaix is 2.5-3 hours.

4.3. Flying

Most regional routes from the British Isles will involve transfer in Paris or Bordeaux towards Brest-Bretagne airport (IATA: BES).

Direct routes:

5. Entry requirements

UK citizens can enter visa-free for up to 90 days in 180.

5.1. EES

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is scheduled to be operational by 2025. First-time visitors will use an automated kiosk to register facial and fingerprint information.

EES collects and records:

  • data listed in your travel document (e.g. full name, date of birth, etc.)
  • date and place of entry into and exit from a European country using the EES
  • facial image and fingerprints (called ‘biometric data’)
  • refusal of entry, where relevant

5.2. ETIAS

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is likely to be in operation. If so, visa-free travellers from the UK need a travel authorisation at a cost of €7 for people aged 18 to 70 (free otherwise) lasting 3 years.

6. Customs

  • 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.
  • 4 litres of still wine.
  • 1 litre of spirits or strong liqueurs over 22% volume or 2 litres of fortified wine, sparkling wine or other liqueurs that are less than 22% volume.
  • 16 litres of beer.

7. Local SIMs

Probably unnecessary for most people.
